Surf Canoe

The original surf canoes used for racing were single hull wooden framed craft with a canvas covering. These craft were designed to bend as they went over a wave. lthough some single hulls are still used in competition today, most crews race in double hull fibreglass canoes.

There are 4 paddlers to a crew with the rear paddlers responsible for the steering.

Male and female crews race in open and under 19 competition, with short and long course races.

Waimairi has a strong tradition in surf canoe racing, with numerous National Championship titles in all catagories.

The club currently has 7 crews and 5 double hulled canoes.
