About the Club

The junior section of Waimairi is primarily involved in teaching kids how to enjoy the beach safely, ages range from 7 yrs to 14 yrs, we have regular training days on most Sundays in summer from 10.30am / 12 noon then finish off with a B.B.Q. lunch.

During these training days children are taught basic skills needed to feel safe in the surf, they also learn about the running of the surf club and how surf patrols work, older children are introduced to basic C.P.R. and first-aid. They learn and practice events competed for in Surf Carnivals. We also enter the junior surf carnivals organised by Surf Life Saving New Zealand / Southern Region and these are generally run once a month over approx. 5 months.

After 14 years of age, members are eligible to sit their Surf Bronze award which allows them to patrol our beach on weekends, award consist disciplines of CPR, theory, swimming, use of radio & a practical exam. All discipline are taught inhouse. All senior members are expected to do approx 4 patrols per season. If interested further awards can be gained ie, various first aid awards or IRB crew & driver awards.

We also compete in various carnivals run by SLSNZ during the season which again offer competitors various disiplines to compete & test their skills against the other Canterbury and New Zealand clubs. Ie, Swim, Board, Ski, Canoe, IRB & Beach events.
